11:Prenylated Flavonols in Epimedium

ABSTRACT

There are 55 herbaceous perennials species in Epimedium genus (Berberidaceae) and China is the modern geographical distribution center with more than 40 species. Icariin and epimedin C are major prenylated flavonols used as marker compounds for the quality control of Herba Epimedii and Epimedii Wushanensis Herba respectively, in Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2010). The over-exploitation of wild populations of Epimedium for use in traditional Chinese medicine has led to potentially serious consequences for the long-term conservation and sustainable utilization of these species. Thus, it is essential to promote the in-depth study of Epimedium. Here we review the bioactive compounds (BCs) discovered in different species, isolation and processing of BCs, pharmacological effects of BCs, genetic and chemical variations among different wild populations and various Epimedium species, flavonoid biosynthesis and regulation in E. sagittatum.
